Paola Navone’s collection for Richard Ginori
Spence & Lyda is proud to present Paola Navone’s collection for Richard Ginori 1735 - Italy’s leading manufacturer of porcelain tableware - to Australia.
The exception on the Italian design scene, Paola Navone has been a formidable fixture in an otherwise male-dominated Italian design elite for the past thirty years. In the 80s, Navone was active in the avant-garde design movements Alchimia and Memphis. In 1988, she created the Mondo brand together with Giulio Cappellini. After living for many years in Hong Kong, Navone now sees herself as an enlightened (and enlightening) ethnic nomad.
A fervent advocate of handicrafts, Navone has a particular talent for rediscovering design from the past and bringing it to life in new, contemporary forms. While her processes remain traditional, there is always a distinct modern edge.
As art director for Richard Ginori 1735, her inspiration which drives the companies contemporary designs as well as the reissue of some of their legendary designs which she has reworked to place them once again in a contemporary setting.
Paola Navone’s prize-winning creations are an amalgam of both Eastern and Western cultures producing a truly global, multi-cultural mix of styles. Her career has covered designing for the great names in Italian furniture such as Driade, Knoll, Alessi, Armani Casa and Zanotta as well as being an architect, art director, interior decorator and an exhibitions and events producer.
Her output bears the imprint of solid training and impressive professional experience, but also of her own personal experiences and a most particular passion for the craft traditions of various cultures and epochs. Paola Navone spent 21 years living in Africa and Asia, and the influences she absorbed keep shimmering through her designs.
