FALLOW BLANKET/THROW - WALLACE SEWELL
The designs in this series have a special provenance: as part of Bauhaus’ centenary celebrations in 2019, Wallace Sewell were commissioned to create a re-edition of Gunta Stölzl’s original Prellerdecke blanket. The project was initiated by the Designshop at Bauhaus Dessau - the German town where the iconic Bauhaus design school and movement was based and where in 1926 the first Prellerhaus blankets were made in the weaving workshops. The original blankets having been lost, meant Wallace Sewell recreating the design by referencing archival drawings and photographs, and also working closely with Gunta Stölzl’s daughter, to capture the rhythm and simplicity of the original design - a bold interaction of horizontal and vertical, positive and negative elements. Albeit, with a few modern updates such as using pure wool, instead of rayon - which was popular in the time of the Bauhaus movement; as well as creating four new colour-ways, which keep the tonal balance and design that is essentially ‘Bauhaus’, whilst updating to a more contemporary palette.
