TALL VASE BASKET / OBJECT - BABATREE
These wonderful handcrafted baskets exude the heartfelt energy, artistry and skills of weavers from the Gurunsi community of Bolgatanga, in Ghana’s Upper East region. Here they practice time-honoured, local weaving traditions, using native veta vera, or elephant, grass, and hence also preserving the culture of basket weaving in their community.
Each of these sculptural baskets bears the hand print, or signature, of the artisan and his/her innate creativity and skill. The intricate process involved in making each one takes the weaver between two to four days, working to their very own ‘rhythm and flow’. Having refined the outcome over time qualifies these pieces as objet d’art, well-suited to contemporary spaces.
It is worth noting that they are produced ethically via a fair trade platform, which ensures all the weavers are properly remunerated for making the baskets, and the maker additionally receives a commission for each one sold. The production of these baskets provides meaningful work and creates sustainable employment with true social impact in the local community.
